UWB Modules

Insight SIP offers a number of options for modules with positioning capability, with different trade-offs in terms of accuracy, cost and efficiency. 

UWB technology offers the most advanced positioning performance using RF technology. 

The key benefits of UWB over other options are

• Highest precision – to ~10cm accuracy
• Most robust in handling difficult environments
• Fastest to make individual position measurements, and thus well suited to measuring moving objects
• Low overall power consumption due to fast measurement speed.

As UWB uses a high frequency high bandwidth pulse it ismuch easier to isolate reflected signals, and seperate signal from noise. It also operates at a different frequency to Bluetooth and WiFi, meaning there is less likely to be competing radio signals in the environment. 

It used to be the case that using UWB technology required dedicated radios at each end of the solution, but now UWB is available natively in new devices from Apple, Samsung and others, making it easier to make UWB based solutions (the latest generation Air Tags use UWB technology, for example. 

Insight SIP’s UWB modules also include a Bluetooth radio; this can be used to easily configure the device, and also be used to manage power consumption, by doing a coarse distance measurement via Bluetooth, and then activating the UWB Radio when needed for a precise measure.
